Those lazy days
are going by too fast
Hello hello!
It’s almost August! How is that possible? As always, the season is flying by in a blur of social activities, family time, good books, beach time, and chores I don’t have time for during the school year. There have been many days where evening comes and I wonder where on earth the day went. But I guess that’s summer.
Here are a few recommendations for (gulp) the last weekend of July.

Read this!
I just finished Heather by Caitlin Mullen and it was the first book I’ve read in ages where I was enjoying it so much that I wanted to hurry back to it when I was doing other things. It’s a mystery about a young woman who moves back to her hometown to become the chief of police. She’s pulled into a decades-old cold case that brings up her own family history, her best friend, and that of the town. I picked it up because it was said to be like God of the Woods by Liz Moore (my favorite book from 2024. If you haven’t read it yet, stop reading and go grab a copy. Then come back and finish reading.). It has the same atmospheric setting, compelling characters, and dual mystery.
Eat this!

I’ve been pretty much on a cooking strike for most of the summer, but last week I did make this delicious honey goat cheese pizza. It’s a white pizza, so no tomato sauce. The recipe doesn’t call for it, but I added a layer of ricotta first, which I’d do again. Summery and delicious!

For my local friends, I have an event coming up tomorrow (Saturday, 7/25) at the Edgartown Library. Last month was the release for the Washashores Review literary anthology, a collection of poetry, essays, and fiction by Vineyard writers. Tomorrow evening I’ll be in conversation with poet Fran Schumer and journalist and memoirist Abby Remer. We’ll read our pieces from the anthology (I have a short story in there called “Neighbors”), discuss writing, community, and wanting (the theme for this edition). If you’re on island, swing by—6-7 at the Edgartown Library.
That’s all for this week. Savor the days for they fly by quickly. Don’t worry though, we still have all of August.
