All the summer things
every last drop
This week my sister-in-law arrived for a visit from Ireland. This also happens to be one of the busiest weeks on the Island, packed full of quintessential Martha’s Vineyard summer activities. So far we’ve done sunset at Menemsha beach, hit Illumination Night, and the Agricultural Fair, and tonight is the annual fireworks display in Oak Bluffs that signals the wind-down of the season. Next week we’ll squeeze in a trip to the farmer’s market, a visit to South Beach, and an off-island trip for back-to-school shopping and for her to explore Trader Joe’s for the very first time. It feels like we’re wringing every drop out of these last few weeks of summer.
Here are a few recommendations for your weekend.
Read this!
How can a book about two women and a bear be so good? In Bear by Julia Phillips (@juliaphillipswrites), Sam and her sister Elena live on an island off the coast of Washington. They dream about a day in the future when they can leave, but for now their ailing mother and lack of funds keep them stuck. Until Sam sees a bear swimming toward the island and everything changes. A modern day fairytale about sisters, love, and the terrifying and magical pull of a bear.
Eat this!
A few weeks ago I featured BLTS in this newsletter, but the classic sandwich just got a vegetarian upgrade with these eggplant BLTs from Cookie and Kate that feature halloumi instead of bacon. I haven’t tried them yet and have never cooked with halloumi, but this recipe is on my list and I’m eager to try it soon.
Watch this!
I always enjoy Liane Moriarty’s books, and she has a new one coming out in September. A few years ago I read Nine Perfect Strangers and this past week I watched the Hulu series based on the novel. An eerie and ethereal Nicole Kidman plays Masha, the head of Tranquillum House, an exclusive (and bizarre) health retreat, where they go to great lengths to help their clients remake themselves. Dark and atmospheric, the series take an interesting look at the extreme wellness industry.
That’s all for this week. Until next time.
Emily
